Gazidis in Russia on Tuesday

Fox Sports reports :

Zenit St Petersburg will meet with Arsenal officials on Tuesday as the two clubs look to strike an agreement over Andrei Arshavin.

The Gunners have already had a reported £10million bid for the 27-year-old rejected by the Russian club, with the UEFA Cup holders rumoured to be seeking a fee nearer £20million.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is optimistic he will land Arshavin this transfer window, and Zenit club spokesman Alexei Petrov has confirmed talks will continue next week, with chief executive Ivan Gazidis set to fly out to Russia.

Petrov said: "Zenit have invited Arsenal officials to come to St Petersburg next Tuesday.

"Zenit does want to find an acceptable option for everyone."

Is He or Isn't He ?

E-mail Print PDF
On reading the "is he or isn't he" stories this morning, it occurred to me that our club transfer record is still the £13 we paid Bordeaux in 2000 for Sylain Wiltord.

Knowing the board's (Peter Hill-Wood's) view that Arsene has plenty of money to spend in the market should he choose to do so... What exactly do they call "plenty of money" ? Referring back to my article a few days ago I made the case that Arsene doesn't work with "big" players that haven't been moulded by him - do you think the board has picked up on this and cut his cloth for him accordingly ?

Its certainly a more plausible explanation than some I've read and heard.

10-for-that-you-must-be-mad

Reading my Quote of the Day this morning :

"If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to."

- Dorothy Parker

Whilst it doesn't make me happy that we're picking over the fruit and veg in Tesco's discount isle this transfer window, it does make me happy that we are not Chelski or ManUre. Mind you, I'd prefer to have their league position right now and be called a unpleasantries than have ours.

So more ArseShavin' action ?

No. None. Lots of gossip and idle speculation mind you though.

As you can expect, there's some horse-trading going on - kind of like the Bazaar scene in "The Life of Brian"....."10-for-that-you-must-be-mad". The long and short of it is that Zenit / Dennis Lachter (ArseShaver's Agent) want around £20m and we want to pay £20. We can all see where this is heading, but I'm willing to wait and see how good Gazidis's hardball negotiating skills are. Well, I'm willing to wait a week.

Tick Tock Tick...

So… no news is good news ?

As you might expect with the transfer window open, rumors are abound concerning Arsenal. Interestingly enough though, a majority of the rumours centre around us looking at current Premiership players. In the past (and before the current financial downard spiral), Wenger has always commented that English players are always over priced; and I've always agreed. (Shaun Wright-Phillips £20 odd million to Chelski for example).

New Year, New Blood but Old Veins

E-mail Print PDF

Arsenal awake into 2009, 5th in the Premier League looking for fresh meat and new blood. Loads of rumours about who's coming in,  who's getting their coat and a few comments over why is that bloke STILL here.

The most interesting signing is the new man upstairs, Ivan Gazidis, Arsenal CEO - who took charge of the club on the 1st January 2009.

He's the man who will be handling the must anticipated new signings that Wenger "has" to make this winter.  Wenger has been in the news recently again expressing his concerns over the economic climate and how a majority of clubs will be caught up by it. Whilst Wenger (a professor in economics)  could very well be right in this fact, he is walking a very fine line between ensuring the club lives financially within its means and its ability to reach at least 4th spot to secure the financial benefit of the Champions League next season.
